Newsome Junior School offers pupils the opportunity to attend a range of

extra-curricular activities.

Educational Visits

Class trips are based on the theme of the topic they are studying that term.

For example; in the Spring Term 2016 linked to the topics:

          Year 3 & 4 – National Coal Mining Museum,

Year 5 & 6 – Visits to the Yorkshire Showground

Each year group also visits a religious place of worship, supporting the pupils' understanding of various faiths. Each year, visits take place to: a Sikh Gurdwara, a Muslim Mosque, a Hindu Mandir, a Buddhist Temple and a Christian Church.

Pupils in Year 4 are expected to attend a one-night residential at Cliffe House

Outdoors Education Centre. A range of outdoor activities are followed up in two well equipped classrooms. Activities include pond dipping, shelter building, clay animal making and problem solving games.

In Year 6, pupils are encouraged to attend a two-night residential trip at Robinwood Outdoor Education Centre in Todmorden. A busy three day programme includes archery, canoeing, climbing and team problem solving.

After-School Interest Clubs

Clubs run throughout the academic year. These include sports clubs such as; athletics, hockey, football, tennis, table tennis, gymnastics, ballroom dancing, street dance and netball. Activities including recorders and choir, as well as art and craft, DT, board games, ICT and iPads are also offered. All after-school interest clubs are planned and delivered by teaching staff and are free of charge. Street dance is delivered by a visiting dance teacher and paid for by school.

After-School Discos

A termly disco offers the opportunity for all pupils from Newsome Junior School to meet with friends and staff in an informal setting. Our resident DJ ‘Lewis’ keeps everyone dancing and singing between 6:00pm and 7:30pm. Each disco is rounded off with an exciting game of pass the parcel. Pupils need to be collected by parents at the end of the disco. Refreshments are on sale – all proceeds from the discos go towards School Fund for the benefit of our pupils.

Zulu Theme Day - Monday 12th Nov

In the Autumn term we were very lucky to be visited by a group of Zulus. They performed songs and dances for us in a special assembly in the morning. Each year group then took part in either a music or a dancing workshop. Parents were invited at 2:00 for a performance assembly where the WHOLE SCHOOL had the opportunity to get up and perform.

Below is a small selection of pictures from the day.
