Everyone working in or for our school service shares an objective to help keep children and young people safe by contributing to:

  • providing a safe environment for children and young people to learn and develop in our school setting, and
  • identifying children and young people who are suffering or likely to suffer significant harm, and taking appropriate action with the aim of making sure they are kept safe both at home and in our school setting’.

Newsome Junior School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the well being of all of its pupilsEach pupil’s welfare is of paramount importance. We will always take a considered and sensitive approach in order that we can support all of our pupils. The school has policies in place to ensure that all of the aspects of Safeguarding are met including:

Children at NJS are made aware of the issues regarding safeguarding that pertain to them through our annual “Safe & Sound” week in the Autumn term. Areas are revisited through our weekly Circle Time lessons and through focussed assemblies, Eg, Anti-Bullying Week.

Safeguarding is a standing item on the staff meeting agenda and forms part of the school’s induction programme for new staff.


The Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is Mrs L. Szewczyk (Headteacher). The Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) is Miss S. Peat (Deputy Head) Our Safeguarding governor is                     Mrs D. Mason. They can be contacted via the school office.
