Lunch-time at Newsome Junior School

Since October 2014, lunch-times have had a complete overhaul: as part of our work towards the Food For Life Silver Award, we have undergone a number of significant changes to improve the quality of the lunch-time experience for all of the pupils in school. These include:

  • The air-line style trays have been replaced with attractive plates and bowls;
  • Cutlery, jugs of water and cups are on the tables;
  • Pupils on sandwiches and school lunches sit and eat together;
  • Pupils sit in friendship groups and participate in social activities, such as conversation cards, sharing poetry, reading jokes and playing paired games;
  • Less time is spent queuing;
  • Pupils are served with their main course by our super kitchen staff led by Diane, our cook;
  • A self-service system for desserts;
  • Staff eat in the dining room with pupils;
  • Special themed days encourage pupils to try a school lunch;
  • Pupils are involved in menu-design.

Here are some quotes from our pupils:

School lunches cost £2.05 a day or £10.25 a week. Please send the money in each Monday in a named envelope.
